The Duty Free World Council (DFWC) Academy is to announce its first course at the upcoming TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition and Conference. Delivery will begin in September, with student enrolment starting immediately.

This latest development represents a major milestone in DFWC’s efforts to develop standards throughout the industry through training and educational activities.

The DFWC Academy, which is supported by TFWA, Dufry Group and Dubai Duty Free will create programmes for professionals working in the industry. It will also be promoted elsewhere to encourage new entrants to pursue a career in DF&TR.

All courses will be fully accredited by recognised learning institutions and take into account the characteristics and challenges facing the industry. The Academy plans to develop courses to certificate, diploma and degree standards catering to development needs of people at all levels within the industry.

Frank O’Connell, President, DFWC said:  “In response to an acknowledged industry need for duty free and travel retail-specific training and accredited career development, we have created the DFWC Academy. I am very happy to announce the launch of its first programme —the Certificate in Duty Free & Travel Retail.

“I have been greatly encouraged by the positive feedback we have received from the industry while developing this initial course and I have no doubt the academy will evolve into a tremendous resource for the industry in the years to come.”

The Academy courses will be developed by a team of academic and travel retail experts working with the Institute of International Retail (IIR). This is an international organisation with global retail and training expertise, which will manage the day-to-day operations of the academy.

According to DFWC, the aim of the course is to increase staff retention and passenger conversion rates in travel retail locations. Participants will gain knowledge and skills to develop in their career and achieve a level of excellence in travel retail based on the DFWC Academy set of Industry Professional Standards.

Certification will be jointly awarded to graduates by the DFWC Academy and IIR and be fully accredited by the globally recognised CPD Standards Office.

The DFWC Academy will be present in Singapore with representatives on hand to provide further information on its courses and how to enrol.
